Many films have popularised the idea of ‘love knows no limitations in our heads over the years, but the reality is frequently quite different from the fanciful stories we’ve been seeing on the big screen.
With the rise of streaming platforms in India, several filmmakers have attempted to capture the realities of unrequited love in its purest form. Here are five Indian web series that has captured the complexity of unrequited love perfectly:
Aadha Ishq
Aadha Ishq,’ a Voot Select Original series, is a modern-day romance saga that follows the tumultuous events that unravel when Rene is swept off her feet by the attractive Sahir, an artist with a troubled romantic history with her mother, Roma. The essence of this romantic tale is what drives Sahir to resurface in his ex-lover Roma’s life after over a decade. Nandita Mehra directs this nine-episode series, which stars Aamna Sharif, Gaurav Arora, Pratibha Ranta, and Kunaal Roy Kapur in key roles, with Suchitra Pillai, Darsheel Safary, and Pooja Bhamrrah in supporting roles.
Indori Ishq

The MX Player Original ‘Indori Ishq,’ starring Ritvik Sahore and Vedika Bhandari, is about Kunal and Tara’s love tale, which hits rock bottom as the former leaves Indore to join a naval college in Mumbai. However, his happy life comes crashing down when Tara dumps him, and he becomes an alcoholic and a chain smoker as a result of jeopardizing his profession. This love drama web series, directed by Samit Kakkad, has nine episodes.
The Married Woman
Set against the backdrop of the 1992 Babri Masjid demolition, ‘The Married Woman’ follows Aastha, a devout wife and devoted mother, and Peeplika, an eccentric artist, as they discover a genuine love in each other. The plot of this ALT Balaji series is whether the love birds bow to society’s chains or break free to enjoy life on their own terms. Ridhi Dogra, Monica Dogra, Suhas Ahuja, Rahul Vohra, Ayesha Raza Mishra, Imaad Shah, Samridhi Dewan, Nabeel Ahmed, and Nadira Babbar feature in the film directed by Sahir Raza.
Broken But Beautiful 3

‘Broken But Beautiful 3’ is directed by Priyanka Ghose and follows Agastya Rao, a struggling theatrical writer-director, and Rumi Desai, an independent lady, on their journey for true love. Agastya and Rumi keep splitting apart every time they decide to give love another opportunity because fate has other plans for them. Sidharth Shukla, Sonia Rathee, Ehan Bhat, Saloni Khanna, Manvir Singh, Taniya Kalra, Jahnavi Dhanrajgir, and Tanvi Shinde are among the cast members of ‘Broken But Beautiful 3’.
Forbidden Love

With four interesting short stories, the Zee5 Original ‘Forbidden Love’ is an anthology series that dives into the dark side of love, including adultery, jealousy, self-doubt, remorse, and heartbreak, to mention a few. Aditya Seal, Pooja Kumar, Omkar Kapoor, Patralekhaa, Ali Fazal, Rannvijay Singha, Aahana Kumra, Chandan Roy Sanyal, Mahesh Manjrekar, and Raima Sen star in the ensemble cast of ‘Forbidden Love.’ Pradeep Sarkar, Priyadarshan, Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury, and Mahesh Manjrekar are the filmmakers behind the anthology series.
