On June 30, Thursday, it was revealed that Jasprit Bumrah would lead India in the fifth and final postponed Test match against England. Following the news, Bumrah became the first pacer to captain India since 1987 and the 36th captain of India in the longer-format.
Following Rohit Sharma’s Covid-19 positive test and KL Rahul’s exclusion from the tour due to a reoccurring groin issue, Virat Kohli’s steadiness as captain is now being missed. India has had 5 different captains in the last 8 Test matches.
The 5 captains in the last 8 Test matches of India:
1) Ajinkya Rahane ( India vs New Zealand first Test, 2021)
2) Virat Kohli ( India vs New Zealand second Test, 2021)
3) KL Rahul (India vs South Africa second Test, 2022)
4) Rohit Sharma ( India vs Sri Lanka first and second Test, 2022)
5) Jasprit Bumrah ( India vs England fifth Test, 2022)
Only one fast bowler, Kapil Dev, had captained the Indian team prior to Bumrah, and that was 35 years prior. The BCCI has declared that wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant will serve as the team’s vice-captain.
Notably, the fast bowler had a significant impact on India’s bowling assault by taking 18 wickets in the four most recent Tests against England. Jasprit has 123 wickets for India in 29 Test matches, with a top tally of 27/6. The absence of Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul from the last Test is a severe blow to the Indian batting order. In the four-Test matches played last year, Sharma scored 368 runs while KL Rahul scored 315 runs for India. KL Rahul is working on his comeback from the groin injury while Rohit is sequestered and recovering from Covid-19.
