Ben Stokes, the captain of England, scored an incredible 155 runs, but it wasn’t enough as Australia won the second Test by 43 runs on an exciting fifth day at Lord’s to take the Ashes by a score of 2-0. Stokes and Stuart Broad had combined 108 runs for the seventh wicket in just over 20 overs when Josh Hazlewood erred, leaving England 70 runs short of its target of 371. Stokes hit nine maximums during his time in the middle, a record for an Ashes innings. He was dropped on 77 and 114. In the end, England was dismissed for 327.
The contentious stumping of Jonny Bairstow by wicketkeeper Alex Carey on day five of the Lord’s Test not only sparked controversy during the run chase but also caused commotion following the game. As Carey threw down the stumps, Bairstow nonchalantly walked out of his crease believing the ball to be dead. After Bairstow was fired, the players got into a furious argument. Carey was told by a very upset Stuart Broad, “That’s all you will be remembered for.”
