Wait, do you know what “Romedy” means? Old-school folks might say, “Roadie?” No – it’s short for romantic comedy. Even the filmmakers figured this out recently! Nadaaniyan, a film about today’s youth (and maybe future generations, too), was released on Netflix. Let’s break it down.
The story revolves around Arjun Mehta (Ibrahim Ali Khan), a talented middle-class boy, and Pia Jaishingh (Khushi Kapoor), a rich girl. They fake a relationship, but as they say, “You can’t reach truth on a bridge of lies” – and when their lies collapse, chaos follows. Will they fix things? Watch the film to find out.
First, this isn’t a movie for everyone. The filmmakers likely knew that. To connect with the characters, you need some life experience. But after the first few scenes, the story picks up a universal rhythm. Even if you don’t relate to it, you’ll get hooked as a casual viewer.
The screenplay is decent but could’ve been sharper. While such films usually focus on romance, Nadaaniyan also touches on real-life issues – career struggles, parent- child relationships, and even societal biases (like gender inequality). You might think wealthy families don’t prefer sons over daughters, but the truth is, this mindset still exists everywhere, rich or poor.
Ibrahim Ali Khan shines as the romantic lead, balancing charm and emotion. At times, he mirrors his dad (Saif Ali Khan!), but he’s carving his own identity. He needs to work hard and learn from experience. With better directors, he’ll grow. That’s what I assume. Khushi Kapoor’s flat expressions oddly work in emotional scenes, though she needs a lot of work on her acting skills.
The film feels like a Karan Johar-style drama but tailored for Gen Z. The Side characters (Suniel Shetty) do fine. The direction has flaws, but is passable. Young couples might enjoy it. The music is good – romantic and sad tracks blend well, and the light background score keeps scenes smooth.
Overall, expectations were low, but Nadaaniyan surprises as a lighthearted rom-com. If you’re into easygoing love stories, give it a shot.
