Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport Wins Prestigious Platinum Award for Energy Efficiency

Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (SVPIA) has reached a noteworthy turning point in its transition to sustainability. The airport, run by Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL), a division of Adani Enterprises, was recently recognized with the Society of Energy Engineers and Managers (SEEM) Awards Platinum Award in the Airport Sector in the Facility Category. On September 26, 2024, in New Delhi, there was an award ceremony honoring the airport’s various endeavors to enhance energy efficiency and implement sustainable practices.

This esteemed honor emphasizes the airport’s leadership position in energy-efficient operations as well as its dedication to environmental responsibility. Gujarat’s main entry point, SVPIA, sets the standard for sustainable airport operations in India.

SVPIA’s Energy-Efficient Initiatives

The airport’s installation of extremely effective centrifugal chillers in its Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems was a major component in SVPIA’s Platinum Award victory. The energy consumption of these chillers is intended to be lowered by an astounding 30%. This cutting-edge technology offers a more environmentally friendly method of cooling huge areas by drastically reducing the amount of electricity used.

Furthermore, the airport has equipped its offices with more than fifty presence sensors to regulate illumination. These sensors immediately turn off the lights when no movement is detected, saving needless power. The airport’s overall energy-saving goals are greatly aided by this automation.

Additionally, SVPIA installed energy-efficient plug fans in place of the HVAC system’s antiquated belt-driven fans. As they consume 25% less energy than the previous systems, these fans are renowned for their low energy usage. By emphasizing energy-efficient ventilation and air quality improvements, SVPIA is leading the way for contemporary airports worldwide.

Electric Vehicle Revolution at SVPIA

The SVPIA replaced eight Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) cars with Electric cars (EVs) in a significant effort to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels. The switch to electric vehicles is a part of a greater effort towards sustainability because they save about 5,000 liters of diesel annually. Additionally, the change drastically lowers greenhouse gas emissions, which helps the airport achieve its objective of having as little of an environmental impact as possible.

Using electric vehicles is not only economical but also ecologically friendly. SVPIA has demonstrated its progressive outlook and dedication to cleaner energy sources by opting to replace conventional vehicles with electric vehicles (EVs) as the technology progresses and becomes more affordable.

Enhanced Cooling Effectiveness Using Fan Coil Systems

SVPIA has made significant advancements in its air conditioning systems, which is another important sector. The airport installed 33 Tonnes of Refrigeration (TR) Fan Coil Units (FCUs) in place of traditional split air conditioning units. Comparing this improvement to the prior systems, a 25% reduction in electricity use was achieved. The FCUs are an energy-conscious option for the airport’s requirements because they effectively cool big regions.
