While serving as one of the Delhi Capitals’ deputies to head coach Ricky Ponting, Ajit Agarkar is expected to play a variety of duties.
Ajit Agarkar, a former India fast bowler, will join the Delhi Capitals as an assistant coach in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. The 44-year old’s-appointment comes after Delhi decided not to renew the contracts of assistant coaches Mohammad Kaif and Ajay Ratra, who were both hired for varying lengths of time till the 2021 season. Kaif took over the post in 2019, whereas Ratra only stayed for one season (2021).
While serving as one of Ricky Ponting’s deputies, Agarkar is expected to play a variety of duties. According to ESPNcricinfo, he will be part of the leadership group that includes Ponting, skipper Rishabh Pant, batting coach Praveen Amre, and bowling coach James Hopes.
As part of Star Sports’ broadcasting crew, the former bowler will join the brand when India’s home series against Sri Lanka is completed. The Sri Lanka trip, which includes three Twenty20 matches and two Test matches, is set to conclude on March 16.
Agarkar, who took 288 wickets in 191 One-Day Internationals and 58 wickets in 26 Tests for India, also led Mumbai to their maiden Ranji Trophy victory in the academic year 2012-13 His appointment in Delhi will be his first in any coaching capacity.
From 2011 to 2013, the pacer was a member of the Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) in the Indian Premier League. Between 2008 and 2010, he also played for the Kolkata Knight Riders. He’s appeared in 62 T20 matches and taken 47 wickets.
The Delhi Capitals have been one of the most consistent and successful teams in the IPL over the last few seasons. They’ve made the playoffs the last three years, including reaching the championship in 2020, where they were defeated by the Mumbai Indians.
