On Tuesday and Wednesday, February 14–15, 2023, Porbandar hosted the Regional Maritime Search and Rescue Workshop and Exercise for the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) Region North West. According to an ICG announcement, the exercise’s goals were to evaluate how different stakeholders would respond in a crisis situation and to improve cooperation.
A workshop on the subject of “Protection of Life at Sea” kicked off the event. The workshop featured lectures from a number of notable speakers, including invited guests from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Earth System Science Organisation-International Centre for Ocean Information Services (ESSO-INCOIS), and Vessel Trafficking Management System (VTMS).
On February 15, 2023, a sea exercise was held off the coast of Porbandar with the participation of many parties. Along with ICG ships and planes, the exercise included participation from the Navy, Indian Air Force, Marine Police, Port Authorities, and other resource organisations. The statement also said that several Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and contingencies from the National Maritime SAR Manual were put to use.
