The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) are anticipating a delay at the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 mega auction set for the 12th and 13th of February. The decision to delay the auction won’t be caused by COVID-19, but rather draw up the best agreement between CVC, the American firm CVC and their ownership of the Ahmedabad franchise.
“The prolonged delay is due to the efforts of the lawyers to come up with appropriate words for the finer details of the agreement. Now the general consensus does appear to have been reached. Although there is acknowledgment of all concerned that the process is taking too long, however, it is believed that the delay can’t be prevented”.
Covid Crisis
The BCCI has already postponed domestic tournaments, which includes the Ranji Trophy due to an increase in COVID-19-related incidents in India. They are also looking into an extension to the T20 league, and potential venues like Mumbai are also under debate.
Match Venue Options for IPL 2022
The BCCI is preparing a plan B for the 15th season that is scheduled to begin in the coming year of IPL. BCCI is believed to be considering Mumbai as the sole location for the whole edition of the event. At the moment there are two options being considered 10 centers or three centers, which include the Wankhede, CCI (Brabourne Stadium) and DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai.
The possibility of returning to the UAE hasn’t been considered, as officials from the BCCI are not keen to host this tournament within this Gulf nation. The previous 1.5 seasons of IPL were played in the UAE which was followed by the T20 World Cup in October this year. It is possible to move the date of the first game by a week – from April 2 to March 25 — is being looked at.
