Marengo CIMS Hospital and QAI’s Holistic Approach to Stroke Care
Newzdaddy Healthcare Updates
In a significant stride toward improving stroke care outcomes, Marengo Asia Hospitals and the Quality and Accreditation Institute (QAI) have partnered to establish the ‘Center of Excellence in Quality & Patient Safety in Stroke Care’ at Marengo CIMS Hospital in Ahmedabad. This collaborative initiative aims to strengthen the healthcare system in the state and region, focusing on elevating stroke care through advanced facilities and comprehensive training programs for the local hospitals and healthcare providers.
The Genesis of Collaboration
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for this collaboration was initiated by Dr. Raajiv Singhal, Managing Director & Group CEO of Marengo Asia Hospitals, and Dr. B K Rana, Chief Executive Officer of Quality & Accreditation Institute (QAI). QAI, founded to create a platform for quality-related expertise sharing, oversees accreditation activities in health and social care. The primary goal of the MoU is to establish a network of primary stroke centres by connecting smaller hospitals, nursing homes, and clinics to Marengo CIMS Hospital and QAI.
The collaborative effort extends beyond Marengo CIMS Hospital, as it aims to empower smaller healthcare institutions to become local hubs for primary stroke care management. This involves incorporating nursing homes and clinics into the program, enabling them to play a pivotal role in the community’s healthcare by providing standardized stroke care. The objective is to extend top-notch stroke care to the residents of Ahmedabad by engaging nearby community hospitals and offering training and expertise to evolve into L1 and L2 stroke centres in association with MCIMS and QAI.

Dr. Raajiv Singhal, Managing Director & Group CEO of Marengo Asia Hospitals, expresses, “In the critical domain of stroke management, the pursuit of excellence is a dedicated responsibility.” He emphasizes the hospital’s commitment to establishing a Hub & Spoke model, incorporating advanced stroke centers and primary stroke centers. The hospital is actively engaged in building the capacity of stroke teams in these centers, providing training in ‘Clinical Management of Stroke Patients’ and ensuring compliance with accreditation standards.

Dr. B K Rana, Chief Executive Officer of Quality & Accreditation Institute (QAI), expresses delight in setting up the ‘Centre of Excellence for Quality & Patient Safety in Stroke Care’ at Marengo CIMS Hospital. The initiative aims to improve clinical outcomes in stroke, enhance capacity building, and establish a network of competent stroke centers.
The Burden of Stroke in India
Stroke is the second most common cause of death in India, with approximately 1,85,000 strokes occurring every year. The cumulative incidence of stroke in India ranges from 105 to 152/100,000 persons per year, indicating the severity of the issue. Notably, lifestyle factors, genetic predisposition, and emerging risk factors contribute to the rising cases of stroke among younger people in India.
Importance of Awareness and Prevention
Emphasizing the importance of awareness, education, and preventive measures, notes that following a stroke, 10% of patients recover almost completely, 25% recover with only minor impairments, and 40% experience moderate-to-severe impairments requiring special care. The collaboration between Marengo CIMS Hospital and QAI is a crucial step in consistently reaching people with information about strokes and their outcomes.
This unique partnership between Marengo Asia Hospitals and QAI signifies a significant step toward enhancing the overall healthcare ecosystem in stroke care, aiming for a lasting impact in Ahmedabad. The collaboration not only focuses on immediate treatment but also emphasizes community engagement, awareness programs, and the development of a network of competent stroke centres. With a commitment to quality, patient safety, and enhanced clinical outcomes, Marengo CIMS Hospital and QAI’s joint efforts are poised to revolutionize stroke care in the region.
