In a world with more people to feed and changing climate conditions, scientists from Corteva Agriscience, the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) joined forces to study a grain called pearl millet. They did something incredible – they looked closely at the pearl millet’s genetic code and found ways to make it grow better and be more nutritious.
Before this study, we didn’t have a good way to understand the DNA of pearl millet. But thanks to this teamwork, they now have very accurate maps of pearl millet’s DNA. This is a huge improvement over what we knew before, about 7,000 times better! These new DNA maps are like a treasure map for growing more pearl millet all around the world, which can help solve food problems.

This research is happening at the perfect time. Leaders from 20 of the world’s biggest countries, called the G20, are talking about how to make sure everyone has enough food to eat. They’re realizing that millets like pearl millet are important because they are super healthy and can survive in tough weather. Also, the United Nations says that 2023 is the “International Year of Millets,” showing how much we care about millets in a changing world.
This special research can help us grow more food that is good for us and good for the planet. They looked closely at the pearl millet’s genes and found things that can help it grow better and fight off diseases. They also discovered that pearl millet has special genes that make it rich in important nutrients. This means we can use it in our diets to stay healthy.
