Empowering Villages: Aarihant College Observes World Diabetes Day in Tintoda
Aarihant Homoeopathic Medical College & Research Institute, affiliated with Swarrnim Startup & Innovation University, organized an impactful World Diabetes Day awareness campaign in Tintoda Village, Gandhinagar. This initiative, held on November 14, aimed to empower the community by educating them about diabetes prevention, early detection, and management.
World Diabetes Day: A Global Call to Action
Observed annually on November 14, World Diabetes Day was established in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the World Health Organization (WHO). This day highlights the urgent need to address the growing global prevalence of diabetes.
The theme for 2024, “Breaking Barriers, Bridging Gaps,” focuses on reducing the risk of diabetes and ensuring that everyone has access to quality healthcare.
Taking Awareness to the Grassroots Level
The campaign in Tintoda Village was led by 25 students and interns from Aarihant Homoeopathic Medical College, with guidance from their dedicated faculty. The two-hour session involved interactive discussions and one-on-one conversations with villagers, explaining the risks, symptoms, and lifestyle changes needed to prevent or manage diabetes.
“Diabetes is a silent killer, and many people are unaware of its impact. Our mission was to bridge the knowledge gap and help the community make informed decisions about their health,” shared Prof Dr Amita V Peter, Principal of Aarihant Homoeopathic Medical College & Research Institute.
Understanding Diabetes: A Closer Look
The awareness program delved into the different types of diabetes, namely:
- Type 1 Diabetes: Often diagnosed in childhood and requires insulin treatment.
- Type 2 Diabetes: Linked to lifestyle factors and can often be managed with diet and exercise.
- Gestational Diabetes: A temporary condition that affects some women during pregnancy.
The campaign emphasized early detection, which plays a vital role in managing these conditions effectively.
Practical Guidance for a Healthier Life
Participants were educated on adopting healthier lifestyles, including:
- Eating a balanced diet low in sugar and refined carbohydrates.
- Incorporating regular exercise into daily routines.
- Recognizing early warning signs like frequent urination, excessive thirst, and fatigue.
The team also shed light on affordable healthcare options and how to access treatment for diabetes in rural areas.
A Collaborative Effort by Experts and Students
This initiative was spearheaded by Prof Dr Amita V Peter, with faculty members Dr. Rakesh Kumar Sharma, Head of Community Medicine, and Dr Jaya Srivastava, Assistant Professor, playing pivotal roles in its execution. Their collaborative approach ensured that the villagers received accurate and practical advice.
“We believe in hands-on education for our students, and what better way than contributing to a meaningful cause? This campaign allowed students to connect with the community while applying their medical knowledge,” said Dr Rakesh Kumar Sharma.
The Impact of Awareness
The session not only educated the villagers but also encouraged them to share their learnings with others in their community. Many participants expressed gratitude, acknowledging that the information they received could potentially save lives.
“Knowledge is the first step to empowerment. Through campaigns like this, we hope to reduce the burden of diabetes in rural areas,” remarked Dr Jaya Srivastava.
A Commitment to Health Education
The awareness campaign reflects Aarihant Homoeopathic Medical College’s dedication to improving community health. By aligning with global initiatives like World Diabetes Day, the institute aims to make a lasting impact on public health, especially in underserved areas.
