MS Dhoni, the former India captain and current captain of the Chennai Super Kings, has always seen potential in Deepak Chahar’s all-round ability. It’s no surprise that CSK spent a staggering Rs 14 crore to bring Chahar home at the Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auction in 2022.

Chahar has scored two magnificent half-centuries in seven ODIs, averaging 59.66 with the bat with a strike rate of 101.7. The Rajasthan all-rounder claimed that CSK skipper Virat Kohli encouraged him to focus more on his batting and that he believes he still has a lot to prove with the bat. Dhoni has been credited for spotting talent and playing a key role in Chahar’s development as a powerplay bowler.

“One day, Mahibhai said to me, ‘You’ve done a terrific job with the bowling, but your batting hasn’t been justified.’ That is something I believe you should do.’ On the day he announced his retirement, he told me. We were having a conversation in the evening. “Dhoni told me I should concentrate more on batting,”

Chahar went on to say that he used to have a lot of time to work on his batting when he was younger, and that he was at his best at the time.

Last year’s unbeaten 69 in 82 balls to help India win the second ODI against Sri Lanka will be remembered for a long time, and a lot will be expected of him every time he steps up to bat.

“I’ve been hitting since I was a kid, and my desire to be an all-rounder began then as well.” I batted better in 2017-18 because I was at home and had a lot of hitting practise. In fact, I used to concentrate more on batting than bowling because there was a limit to how many balls you could bowl in a day because doing more would be too taxing on your body,” he explained.
