The cricket boards of both countries announced on Wednesday that New Zealand’s limited-overs tour of Australia has been postponed indefinitely due to uncertainties about when the tourists will be permitted to return home according to COVID-19 rules (January 19).
The tour included three one-day internationals in Perth, Hobart, and Sydney, as well as a single Twenty20 match in Canberra, and was scheduled from January 24 to February 9. New Zealand Cricket (NZC) and Cricket Australia (CA) both confirmed they were working out a schedule for the matches.
“As we now know, the arrival of Omicron induced a change of heart on the part of the New Zealand government, culminating in a mandatory 10-day isolation period for all arriving tourists,” NZC Chief Executive David White stated.
“NZC and CA had discussed expanding the tour and delaying the squad’s return to New Zealand in the hopes of making it more feasible for the government to approve. Unfortunately, we received word this morning that they were unable to provide any assurances on this.” The NZC and CA both stated that talks on when the postponed games will be played are still ongoing.
CA stated ticket holders will be compensated and that the team’s T20 Internationals against Sri Lanka next month would be confirmed as soon as possible.
From February 11 to February 18, Australia will play Sri Lanka in five Twenty20 matches.
CA CEO Nick Hockley said, “We know fans will be upset, and we thank them for their understanding given the unusual conditions that the global pandemic poses for everyone.”
