England’s New Men’s Test Team Captain
The England & Wales Cricket Board has named Ben Stokes captain of the England Men’s Test team. He takes over as the 81st captain of the England Men’s Test team, succeeding Joe Root. Following the proposal of England Men’s Cricket Managing Director, Rob Key, the ECB Interim Chair and Chief Executive Officer approved the appointment on Tuesday evening.
Rob Key, the Managing Director of England Men’s Cricket, said of the appointment, “I had no hesitation in offering Ben the post of Test captain.”
He embodies the mindset and approach that we want to use to propel this squad into the next age of red-ball cricket. I am overjoyed that he has agreed, and I am confident that he is up to the increased duty and honour. He is well-deserving of this opportunity.”
“I am delighted that Ben has accepted to become England Men’s Test captain, which is another wonderful achievement in his outstanding career in an England shirt,” said Tom Harrison, ECB Chief Executive Officer.
“He is sincerely and passionately committed to what it means to represent England, and he will proudly lead us into a new age.” It’ll be a crucial summer for our Test team, and Ben and his teammates will no doubt embrace the task.”
Cricketing Career of Ben Stokes
Stokes debuted in Test cricket in December 2013 and has since played 79 times for his country.
In February 2017, he was chosen vice-captain, and he also served as captain when Root was away for the birth of his second child in the summer of 2020. Durham’s star presently has 5,061 Test runs at a 35.89 average. With the ball, he has 174 wickets and is one of the top all-rounders in the world.
