Smartphone manufacturers are innovating across all segments to make consumers’ life easier and provide value by providing a seamless experience or a unique proposition that stands out among competitors. Oppo is one such smartphone manufacturer that has built a reputation for producing attractive devices that don’t break the bank. Now, ahead of its launch, the handset company has revealed to ABP Live what goes into creating the Oppo F21 Pro’s industry-first Fiberglass Leather design.

Fiberglass Leather is a sustainable design, and the Sunset Orange variation of the Oppo F21 Pro also doubles as a “frameless” battery cover, according to the manufacturer. “Fiberglass Leather is a hybrid of Lychee-grain leather and Fibreglass,” Oppo explained. “Both materials are bonded by modifying their individual properties to ensure that the end product can handle extreme heat and pressure, making the phone highly durable.”

The Oppo F21 Pro Sunset Orange variant’s design took two years to perfect, according to the firm. “Oppo spends extensively in research and development in order to provide superior devices to its users. For example, Tasleem Arif, Vice President, India R&D Head, Oppo India, told ABP Live’s Krishna SinhaChaudhury, “Our teams have spent almost two years refining the design for the new F21 Pro Sunset Orange model, which features the industry’s first Fiberglass Leather design that withstands high temperatures while being water-resistant.”

“Similarly, the F21 Pro in Cosmic Black has our patented ‘glow’ technology, which gives it a glossy appearance while maintaining a matte feel in the palm. “It’s also stain and fingerprint resistant,” Arif added.

What sets Fiberglass Leather apart from other imitation leather finishes on the Oppo F21 Pro?

Faux leather isn’t new; Samsung utilized it in the Galaxy Note 3 back in 2013. However, faux leather has several drawbacks. Oppo, on the other hand, is attempting to set the Oppo F21 Pro’s leatherback apart from fake leather finishes by making the final processed Fiberglass Leather much thinner than other faux leather designs. “We put the completed Fiberglass Leather through the ultimate durability test to confirm its excellence. It has been put through a series of simulated friction tests to imitate the wear and tear of everyday use. 5,000 alcohol rubbing tests and 200,000 denim rubbing tests are among the tests performed.

colour fidelity and durability testing, as well as 10,000 rubber eraser tests,” the company added.

It’s worth noting that the upcoming Oppo F21 Pro has ditched the plastic mid-frame support in favor of a leather-and-metal design inspired by old film cameras. The Sunset Orange model will be 7.54 mm thick, while the Auroral Blue model will be 7.49 mm thick and the Cosmic Black model with a 2.5D front will weigh 175 grams.

The Oppo F21 Pro 8GB/128GB storage capacity is estimated to cost Rs 21,990 for the 4G model and Rs 25,990 for the 5G model.
