For his critically praised film “Gangubai Kathiawadi,” which stars Alia Bhatt in the lead role, Sanjay Leela Bhansali has officially begun a BAFTA Awards campaign.
The Royal Festival Hall in London will play host to the 76th British Academy Cinema Awards, the UK’s largest celebration of international film achievement, in February 2023. “Gangubai Kathiawadi” will be nominated for BAFTA members to vote on in all categories as part of the campaign, including Best Film, Director, Adapted Screenplay, Leading Actress, and Film Not in the English Language.
In February of this year, “Gangubai Kathiawadi” made its world premiere at the 72nd Berlinale International Film Festival, where it was greeted with a standing ovation and positive reviews. At the box office, the movie eventually made more than $23 Million (£19.9M) in total.
The movie had a successful run in theatres all around the world before its Netflix streaming debut, where it debuted at No. 1 (Non-English Film) in the first week. Additionally, for several weeks, the movie was among the Top 10 trending movies in over 25 different nations. It is currently the second-most-watched non-English-language movie on the streaming service worldwide.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s “Devdas,” starring Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, is no stranger to the prestigious awards ceremony; it was previously nominated at the 56th BAFTA Awards for Best Foreign Language Film.
In October, “Gangubai Kathiawadi” was added to the BAFTA voting members’ official screening schedule. Sanjay Leela Bhansali will attend a number of events in the British capital to promote the cause.
