The company has announced that it will reduce its Scope 1 and Scope 2 carbon emissions by 30% by 2030, reinforcing its deep commitment to building a sustainable future.

For GHCL, sustainability is more than just a goal—it’s a way of doing business. The company has pledged to become carbon neutral by 2047, the year India celebrates its 100th year of independence.

Before diving deeper, let’s understand what Scope 1 and 2 emissions are. Scope 1 refers to direct emissions from GHCL’s operations—like fuel used in its manufacturing plants. Scope 2 includes indirect emissions, such as electricity bought from external sources. Cutting down on both is vital for any industry looking to go green.

This year’s World Earth Day theme, “Our Power, Our Planet,” focuses on clean energy. GHCL’s green journey perfectly aligns with this message. It has adopted several innovative practices that not only reduce emissions but also help conserve natural resources.

One standout initiative is biomass co-firing in boilers. Instead of relying solely on fossil fuels, GHCL uses biomass—a cleaner and renewable source of energy. Another game-changer is the use of return seawater in a 1650 TR chiller, drastically cutting down freshwater use.

The company has even set up an internal carbon pricing system, which guides teams in making climate-conscious decisions. Dedusting systems are also in place to keep the air clean by controlling particulate emissions.

GHCL’s textile division is making great strides too. It has saved 4.4 million units of electricity through energy-saving interventions. With 62.3 MW of wind and solar power installed, a whopping 75% of the energy needs are met through renewables. That’s a huge step toward energy independence and lower emissions.

GHCL isn’t just focusing on factories. It is also transforming its logistics operations by adding 40-tonne electric trucks, electric vehicles, and CNG-powered buses within its plants. This move cuts transportation-related emissions and sets a great example for the industrial sector.

GHCL understands that protecting nature involves more than just lowering emissions. The company has built a 150 TPD Rotating Biological Contactor plant to treat wastewater efficiently. Through rainwater harvesting, it has helped recharge groundwater in Gujarat, benefiting over 10,000 rural residents.

In Bhavnagar, GHCL has taken up mangrove afforestation across 122 hectares, planting over five lakh mangroves. These trees not only protect the coast but also boost marine biodiversity.

GHCL is also growing Miyawaki forests using 180 native species, helping create dense green zones quickly. In addition, the company supports green farming by distributing over 35,000 saplings and planting over 1 lakh trees across 164 hectares.

Even before its new soda ash plant begins operations in Mandvi taluka of Kutch, GHCL has started helping local farmers. It has distributed over 1500 tonnes of organic manure and green fodder to 15 villages, benefiting 10,000 animals.

These efforts haven’t gone unnoticed. GHCL received a 5-star rating from the Indian Bureau of Mines for its Dhamanva-Gabha Limestone Mine. It also bagged the Challenger Award at the Frost & Sullivan Sustainability Awards, a testament to its dedication to eco-friendly practices.
