The Global Uro Oncology Congress, a pivotal cancer awareness program, unfolded at The Westin Hotel in Kolkata from November 23 to 25, 2023. The conference, organized by the Urological Society of India- Uro Onco Section and chaired by Dr. Amit Ghose, aimed to share cutting-edge knowledge on kidney, prostate, and bladder cancers on a global scale.
The event included a pre-conference workshop for resident doctors, discussions on achieving national consensus on Uro Oncology, and the exploration of recent advancements in the field. Attended by Urology experts from across the nation and beyond, the congress emerged as a unique gathering with benefits for both the scientific community and society at large.
One of the highlights was the acknowledgment of pioneers in Uro Oncology, particularly those contributing to the Robotic Revolution in cancer surgery. Dr. Mani Menon, an India-born luminary in the field, received “The Tagore Medal” for a lifetime of achievements, symbolizing his role in making once-impossible cancer surgeries a reality. Professor Prokar Dasgupta, a Calcutta Medical College alumnus and a leading figure in Robotic Surgery globally, was honored with “The Pride of Bengal Award” for his excellence.
The Congress also celebrated the contributions of many living legends in Urology across India, presenting them with the “Awards of Excellence” for their dedicated work in Uro Oncology.
In a media statement, Dr. Amit Ghose, Chairman of the Global Uro Oncology Congress, emphasized the event’s mission to share up-to-date knowledge nationally and internationally. Beyond scientific exchange, the congress aimed to raise awareness about cancer risk factors, promoting preventive measures against smoking, obesity, sedentary habits, and other contributors. Dr. Ghose emphasized the importance of early diagnosis through measures like PSA tests and regular health checkups, with the ultimate goal of decreasing cancer morbidity and mortality.
The burden of cancer worldwide is rapidly growing, with 20 lakh cancer patients and 9 lakh deaths annually. Urological cancers, including prostate, kidney, and bladder, constitute a significant 10% of this incidence. Despite the rising numbers, the survival rate exceeds the death rate, offering hope and optimism in the battle against cancer.
Organized in collaboration with the Urological Society of India- Uro Onco Section, Dr. Amit Ghose, a stalwart in Uro Oncology based at Apollo Hospitals, spearheaded the conference. With over 35 years of experience and the successful treatment of over 10,000 patients, Dr. Ghose’s initiative in organizing the Global Uro Oncology workshop has proven invaluable to upcoming surgeons.
