Hazra Park Durgotsab Celebrates 81st Year with Unique Autorickshaw Theme
Newzdaddy Religious Updates
Kolkata, October 18, 2023: Hazra Park Durgotsab, a famous festival in South Kolkata, is back, and this time, they’ve chosen an interesting theme called ‘Teen Chakar Golpo‘ (Tale of 3 Wheels) to mark their 81st year. The inauguration was graced by notable figures like Janab Firhad Bobby Hakim, Hon’ble Mayor of Kolkata, and others.
This year’s theme focuses on auto-rickshaw drivers who work tirelessly, shuttling people around in their three-wheeled vehicles. They don’t earn much, but they do their best to make their families happy. The puja pandal (decorative structure) recreates an auto stand, complete with local buildings and auto parts. It tells the human side of these drivers who work 24/7, juggling their roles as parents, spouses, and children. Their stories are shared through voice-overs.
Sri. Sayan Deb Chatterjee, Joint Secretary of Hazra Park Durgotsab Committee, explained that while we may not always think about auto drivers’ daily struggles, this theme aims to shed light on their lives. Auto drivers work hard to provide for their families and give their children a good education, despite their modest earnings.

These auto rickshaw drivers, often called “uncle,” “auto,” or “dada” by passengers, are a vital part of Kolkata’s transportation network. During this festive season, the Hazra Park Durgotsav committee pays tribute to them and showcases their stories.
Hazra Park Durgotsab: This puja holds a special place in Kolkata’s history. It started in 1942, supported by the Calcutta Municipal Corporation, to allow people from all backgrounds to participate. Back then, lower-caste individuals weren’t allowed into traditional pujas. The puja has continued to welcome everyone, and they even serve around 1000 meals to underprivileged individuals during the festivities. This symbolizes respect for those who have kept the city clean and promotes the idea that all people should be treated equally, regardless of their birth.
