In the recent ODI World Cup 2023 match on November 2, Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami delivered an outstanding performance by taking 5 wickets for just 18 runs, helping India secure a 302-run victory over Sri Lanka. This remarkable feat marked Shami’s third five-wicket haul in ODI World Cups, and it also made him India’s top wicket-taker in the tournament with 45 wickets in just 13 games, surpassing Zahir Khan and Javagal Shrinath.
During the post-match presentation, Shami shared the secret behind his incredible bowling success. He attributed it to the hard work and rhythm that the bowling unit had developed through their dedicated efforts.
Shami explained, “All the hard work we are putting in, the rhythm we have found, it’s because of that that you are getting to see this storm (on the cricket field), the incredible things our bowling unit is doing. The rhythm we are bowling with, I can’t believe anyone will not enjoy it. So, yes, we are enjoying ourselves a lot and working together as a unit, and you can see the results of that.”
Shami’s five-wicket haul against Sri Lanka was his second in three matches in the ODI World Cup 2023. He emphasized the importance of maintaining the right line and length when bowling, especially in major tournaments like the World Cup.
“Yeah, I am trying (to do my best), as always, trying to pitch the ball in the right areas and trying to find the right rhythm, because in big tournaments, if you lose rhythm it’s very difficult to get it back. So right from the start, the attempt has been to focus on the right areas and right lengths, and it’s working, so why not try to repeat it?”
Remarkably, none of Shami’s 45 World Cup wickets have been from LBW (Leg Before Wicket), and he didn’t have a specific explanation for this. In his recent five-wicket haul, four wickets were taken through catches, and one was bowled out.
Shami summed up his successful performance by saying, “No rocket science. It is just a matter of rhythm, good food, keeping your mind uncluttered, and, most importantly, the love of the people. The support we get in India has a huge role. When you go out of India, you get so much support from Indians. So I will keep trying to make everyone happy.”
This victory against Sri Lanka marked India’s seventh consecutive win in the ODI World Cup 2023, making them the first team to qualify for the semi-finals.
