The Team India medium pacer Shardul Thakur’s dazzling figures of 7/61 sent the visitors back in the match on the second day of the 2nd Test match in the series against South Africa at Wanderers in Johannesburg on Tuesday (January 4). Thakur finished his first Five-wicket mark in cricket and was able to bring down South Africa for 229 as India surrendered an advantage of just 27 runs.
It is believed that Mumbai as well as a former Chennai Super Kings seamer now holds the record for highest performance in the field for Indian bowlers in South Africa. He beat Harbhajan Singh who took 7/120 during the Cape Town Test during India’s tour of 2010-11.
The best innings statistics of the year for India in SA
7/61 – Shardul Thakur, Johannesburg 2021-22
7/120 – Harbhajan Singh, Cape Town 2010-11
6/53 – Anil Kumble, Johannesburg 1992-93
6/76 – Javagal Srinath, Port Elizabeth 2001-02
6/138 – Ravindra Jadeja, Durban 2013-14
Thakur currently holds the record for the best bowling performance for India in the match against South Africa in a Test inning. He has surpassed Ravichandran Ashwin to go top of the list in this field.
The show also featured him writing an unheard feat, because he currently has the joint-highest figures of any bowler playing at the venue since the South African re-admission in 1992. In the past, England speedster Matthew Hoggard had returned with the exact numbers for South Africa, a feat which he accomplished in 2004-05.
Thakur might have posted the most impressive bowling figures ever recorded in Test cricket for one Indian in the match against South Africa but the pacer believes his best is yet to be had in the longest format. In response to questions about the way he played Shardul stated, “Yes it is my best figures but my best is always yet to come I would say.”
On the stumps of Day Two, the scoreboard reads 85/2 and has Pujara (35 not out) and Rahane (11 not out) at the crease. Like Day One 11 wickets fell during day two, as Shardul Thakur took the lead on Tuesday.
“My success in cricket in India playing white-ball and red-ball cricket has been acknowledged. When I am given the opportunity to take on India I’m always ready to take it on, and particularly in Test cricket because it is the purest version of the game,” Shardul said. Shardul during the press conference following the final day’s action.
“Whenever I am playing red-ball cricket my energy is the same and I m willing to take wickets for the team,” said the player.
Shardul Thakur also talked about the impact his coach from childhood Dinesh Lad played for the all-rounder. “Yes it is true that the coach (Dinesh) has been a major influence on my playing career as he’s a second-parent to me. He helped me get the opportunity to showcase my talents, and offered me an opportunity to attend an institution in Borivali and ever since my life has been transformed,” Shardul said. Shardul.
India during the 2nd innings was off to a shaky start when the skipper in stand-in KL Rahul was exiled in the seventh over. India’s woes grew as Mayank Agarwal offered no shot and was awarded LBW to be dismissed.
