“Indian 2” Movie Review: Plot and Storyline
‘Indian 2’, directed by Shankar and starring Kamal Haasan, is the much-anticipated sequel to the 1996 hit film ‘Indian’. The story follows Senapathy, also known as Indian Thatha, as he returns to fight corruption in modern India. Chitra Aravindan (Siddharth) and his friends run a YouTube channel called ‘Barking Dogs’, known for parodies and political satire. Frustrated by the lack of impact their videos have, they start a campaign called ‘Come Back Indian’ to bring back Senapathy, believing only he can end corruption. Senapathy makes a comeback, punishing corrupt individuals in bizarre ways while promoting Gandhian ideology. However, his actions soon lead to unintended consequences, forming the crux of the story.
“Indian 2” Movie Review: Acting
Kamal Haasan reprises his role as Senapathy, but his performance feels off due to the Hindi dubbing in Tamil, which is quite jarring. Siddharth, who plays Chitra Aravindan, oversells his character for most of the film but manages to deliver a key emotional scene in the second half. The supporting cast, including Priya Bhavani Shankar, Rakul Preet Singh, and others, add little value to the movie. Bobby Simha and the late actor Vivekh have some notable moments.
The overall acting is appreciated but not able to hold me for 3 hours.
“Indian 2” Movie Review: Direction and Screenplay
Director Shankar, known for his ability to evoke strong emotions, misses the mark with ‘Indian 2’. The film feels like a lengthy WhatsApp forward about corruption, dragging on with repetitive and absurd sequences. The screenplay is weak, making the movie feel disjointed and forced. The storyline of starting an online campaign and staging protests feels artificial and rushed.
“Indian 2” Movie Review: Cinematography and Music
The cinematography is decent but not memorable. Anirudh Ravichander’s songs are forgettable, and even the background music fails to make a significant impact. However, the nostalgic tunes from the first film, scored by AR Rahman, do bring back some fond memories. The overall BGM is weak and does not add any value to the movie.
“Indian 2” Movie Review: Positive Points
- Kamal Haasan’s return as Senapathy has some nostalgic value.
- The trailer for ‘Indian 3’ shown during the end credits creates excitement and anticipation.
- Good Production value.
- Excellent VFX and Cinematography.
“Indian 2” Movie Review: Negative Points
- The plot and storyline are unoriginal and repetitive, with corruption as the central theme is done to death.
- The acting, particularly the dubbing of Kamal Haasan, is off-putting.
- The direction and screenplay fail to engage the audience, making the film feel like a lengthy lecture on corruption.
- Absurd and dragged-out sequences make the film tedious to watch.
- The make-up and prosthetics look less convincing than in the first film.
- Poor BGM.
“Indian 2” Movie Review: Conclusion
‘Indian 2’ is a disappointing sequel that fails to live up to the legacy of its predecessor. With a weak storyline, unengaging direction, and subpar performances, the film struggles to make an impact. While it does bring back some nostalgia and sets up potential excitement for ‘Indian 3’, it ultimately leaves the audience wishing for a more compelling and concise narrative.
