New York, September 22, 2023: As the United Nations General Assembly week brings the world together for its 78th session, three organizations—Reliance Foundation, Observer Research Foundation (ORF), and United Nations India—are hosting two important discussions. These dialogues revolve around the theme, “India’s journey towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).”
Delivering Development: Journeys, Directions, and Lighthouses
On September 22, 2023, the focus is on India’s ambitious plans to improve many aspects of life. These include making healthcare and education better, ensuring there’s enough food and energy for everyone, boosting the economy, and preparing for climate challenges. We’ll also talk about how India is working toward the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
South Rising: Partnerships, Institutions, and Ideas
On September 23, 2023, the conversation shifted to India and the Global South’s role in supporting the UN’s SDG goals. We’ll discuss how these regions play a big part in global development and look ahead to what comes after 2030.
At these events, a special publication called ‘Ideas, Innovation, Implementation’ will be released. This publication explores the work of development organizations in India for each of the 17 SDGs.
H.E. Ruchira Kamboj, Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations, says, “We need to share stories of success that can help other countries, especially those in the Global South. India’s development journey and its innovative approaches to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals can be models for others.”
Mr. Jagannatha Kumar, CEO of Reliance Foundation, adds, “We’re not just looking at how well we’ve done on the SDGs. These dialogues aim to find new, creative ways to move forward, even beyond 2030.”
Dr. Samir Saran, President of the Observer Research Foundation, explains, “India has become a strong voice for the Global South, and we believe our approaches can guide others. The publication ‘Ideas, Innovation, Implementation’ aims to spark discussions on how we can build more equal societies and a better planet.”
Mr. Shombi Sharp, UN Resident Coordinator in India, highlights India’s positive impact on the SDGs, from reducing poverty to promoting digitalization and women-led development. He says, “We need to keep this momentum going until 2030 and beyond.”
These dialogues will feature high-level speakers and experts, including Ruchira Kamboj, Hemang Jani from The World Bank Group, Melissa Fleming from the United Nations, Christopher Elias from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and many more. They all aim to continue the dialogue, create new partnerships, and generate fresh ideas to speed up global progress towards the SDGs.
