Ahmedabad, September 11, 2023: In a remarkable medical achievement, doctors at Marengo CIMS Hospital in Ahmedabad, India, successfully saved the life of a 24-year-old patient from Mozambique who was suffering from a rare and life-threatening tumor called pheochromocytoma. This tumor had grown to the size of a small football and was affecting the patient’s adrenal gland.

The young man had been struggling with this tumor since 2019, but no doctor was willing to perform surgery on him due to the complexity of his condition. His situation became critical, and it seemed like he had very little time left. However, the team of doctors at Marengo CIMS Hospital stepped in and demonstrated their clinical excellence once again.

The patient, who had been dealing with uncontrolled high blood pressure, a rapid pulse rate, severe headaches, and other symptoms resembling a heart attack, arrived at Marengo CIMS Hospital in a dire state. The tumor in his adrenal gland had been growing for several years and had become extremely challenging to treat. The COVID-19 pandemic had further delayed his treatment in Mozambique, where the medical infrastructure and expertise were limited.

By the time he reached Marengo CIMS Hospital, the tumor had more than doubled in size, making it even more difficult to remove. It was firmly attached to his right kidney and liver and was supplied by multiple blood vessels. Removing such a massive tumor, about the size of a small football, in a young patient with dangerously high blood pressure was an incredibly challenging task.

Typically, patients like him are put on medication for 7 to 10 days to control their blood pressure before surgery. However, in this case, due to the pressing symptoms and recent bleeding in the tumor, urgent action was necessary. The patient had only 1 to 2 days to be saved from a potentially fatal outcome.

Dr. Nitin Singhal, Clinical Director at Marengo CIMS Hospital, expressed his satisfaction, stating, “We are relieved that we could successfully remove the tumor without significant blood loss and save both the kidney and liver. This massive tumor is one of the largest adrenal pheochromocytomas ever resected, measuring 18 x 15 x 13 cm. This accomplishment was possible thanks to the excellent teamwork of our medical professionals.”

Dr. Raajiv Singhal, Managing Director and Group CEO of Marengo Asia Hospitals emphasized the hospital’s commitment to providing top-quality healthcare to patients from around the world, stating, “Through this patient’s case, we reaffirm our dedication to Medical Value Travel (MVT), which focuses on accessible, high-quality healthcare and cost-effective treatment options. Our efforts are aimed at meeting the challenges of treating patients who seek medical assistance from our institution.”

Pheochromocytomas are rare tumors, affecting only about 2 to 8 out of every one million people. In some cases, they can occur in both adrenal glands, particularly in younger patients with genetic syndromes associated with pheochromocytoma.
