Manchester United, who were knocked out of the Champions League after losing to Atletico Madrid at Old Trafford on Tuesday, are likely to face UEFA sanctions after their supporters threw objects at visiting manager Diego Simeone.

Simeone was pelted with plastic bottles, beverages, and other things as he ran towards the tunnel at the end of the game, in which Atletico won 1-0 for a 2-1 aggregate triumph.

The incident will almost certainly be mentioned in the UEFA match delegate’s report on the game, triggering a disciplinary investigation and, maybe, a sanction.

In terms of the match, Atletico Madrid eliminated Manchester United from the Champions League and advanced to the quarter-finals with a 1-0 (2-1 aggregate) win at Old Trafford thanks to a 41st-minute header from Brazilian Renan Lodi.

It was a typical display of Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid’s tenacious defending and quick counter-attacking, while United, despite their pressure, we’re unable to produce enough quality opportunities to score the goal they required.

United must now concentrate on a Premier League campaign in which they will be in a serious fight to finish in the top four and qualify for the Champions League next season.
