In a bid to improve emergency medical care, Marengo CIMS Hospital has launched a groundbreaking initiative called ‘Urgency for Emergency – 60 Minutes for Life’, which aims to empower individuals with essential life-saving skills for critical medical emergencies like strokes, heart attacks, and trauma.

The initiative was officially launched on February 14, 2025, with a clear focus: ensuring that timely medical intervention is provided during medical emergencies, thereby increasing the chances of survival and reducing the risk of complications. Marengo CIMS Hospital, located in Ahmedabad, India, is already known for its cutting-edge medical care, and this initiative is a testament to their ongoing efforts to enhance emergency medical services.

As Dr. Keyur Parikh, Chairman of Marengo CIMS Hospital, explains, the critical factor in saving lives during emergencies is time. Whether a person is suffering from a heart attack, stroke, or a severe trauma injury, every second counts. He emphasizes that quick intervention can drastically improve survival rates and minimize complications. The goal of this initiative is to reduce the number of lives lost due to delays in receiving proper care.

The program is particularly focused on helping people recognize emergencies and respond swiftly. In the event of a medical crisis, every minute counts. Knowing what to do before medical professionals arrive can mean the difference between life and death. With this in mind, the ‘Urgency for Emergency’ campaign aims to teach individuals simple, effective emergency response techniques.

Marengo CIMS Hospital’s Advanced Centre for Trauma and Emergency Care is fully equipped with the latest medical technologies and a highly trained multidisciplinary team. The hospital is prepared to respond quickly and efficiently to all emergency cases, ensuring patients receive expert care within the critical “Golden Hour.”

This “Golden Hour” is a crucial period following a medical emergency, during which rapid intervention is necessary to prevent serious long-term damage or even death. In cases of strokes, for example, if the patient does not receive treatment within 4.5 hours, the chances of irreversible brain damage increase significantly.

The program also focuses on training first responders — such as community members, local healthcare workers, and emergency personnel — so that they can act quickly and effectively in emergency situations. Dr. Raajiv Singhal, Founding Member, Managing Director, and Group CEO of Marengo Asia Hospitals, emphasized that the initiative aims to build a well-equipped ecosystem that supports timely interventions in emergencies.

To further enhance the program’s impact, Marengo CIMS Hospital has hosted initiatives like the International Conference on Trauma and Acute Care (ITACC) in December 2024. This event brought together experts from Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School to discuss advances in trauma care and the latest life-saving practices.

In India, stroke cases alone account for 1.8 million annually, but only 10% of patients receive treatment within the crucial 4.5-hour window. This delay significantly reduces the chances of recovery and increases the risk of permanent brain damage. The situation is similar with heart attacks, which account for 25% of all deaths, with 50% of fatalities occurring within the first hour due to delayed treatment.

The Marengo CIMS Hospital initiative is also aimed at addressing the lack of proper infrastructure and awareness, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas. The hospital has already trained over 1,000 consultants through its Strokologist Program, which focuses on empowering physicians and healthcare staff with the knowledge and skills to handle stroke cases efficiently. This program is part of their larger goal of creating a network of stroke care centers across India.

The hospital’s neuro-intervention and trauma response teams are on standby around the clock to provide immediate care. Dr. Mukesh Sharma, Director of Neuro Intervention & Stroke, stresses the importance of prompt care for neurological emergencies. For example, a delay in treating ischemic strokes or brain hemorrhages by even a few minutes can lead to permanent disability.

Similarly, trauma care requires fast, coordinated actions. Dr. Pranav Shah, Head of the Orthopaedic Trauma Program, highlights that trauma patients need immediate, precise medical attention to improve their survival chances and minimize complications. Marengo CIMS Hospital’s trauma response team is trained to act quickly and provide life-saving interventions.

Through this initiative, Marengo CIMS Hospital is sending a clear message: Every minute counts; Every life matters. The hospital is not only improving its own response to emergencies but is also empowering the community to act quickly and confidently during critical situations. With this initiative, the hospital hopes to create a network of individuals who can make a real difference in saving lives during the most challenging moments.
