The Plot:
Stars Alia Bhatt, “Jigra,” is an emotional thriller exploring the strong love between a sister and her younger brother. Following the death of their parents during childhood, Satya (Alia Bhatt) fills in as a guardian elder sister looking for her younger brother Ankur, played by Vedang Raina. The basis of the film is their close relationship. Satya is ready to risk all, even her life, to save Ankur when he finds himself in major problems and under a death sentence. Unlike other Bollywood films, Jigra stays grounded and emphasises familial ties and human emotions over simply action or glitz.
The Storyline
The film opens with Satya and her brother showing some nice moments that highlight their relationship, then it rapidly moves to the main plot whereby Ankur gets imprisoned. Viewers are kept interested by Satya’s will and inner struggle to save him. One of the most memorable sequences is Satya visiting her brother in jail following considerable expectation. When she asks the guard whether she appears happy, he says, “No.” She shows her desperation covered in a fake calm by forcing a short, agonising smile. The spectator will find great resonance in Satya’s inner conflict captured by the minute facial gestures.
Another noteworthy scene is aboard the aircraft, when Satya, seated tensely, behaves with a disinterested expression—one of the best scenes in the film—showing her mental state as she tries to control the overwhelming circumstances. These scenes accentuate the unadulterated passion at the core of the movie and enhance its whole attractiveness.
The Acting
Alia Bhatt gives Satya a strong performance that adds levels of sensitivity and a ferocious will. Her character’s journey emotionally resonates because of her strong and convincing acting, particularly in passages like the jail visit and the aeroplane scenario. Playing Ankur, Vedang Raina gives his performance genuineness and rightly captures both fragility and strength. Manoj Pahwa also gives another outstanding performance in the conclusion when he shares a memorable scene with a vintage Bollywood song playing, so fusing nostalgia with the suspense of the moment. The cruel and merciless jailer role drives Satya’s battle to be terrifying and heightens the stakes.
The Direction:
Director Vasan Bala deserves praise for turning Jigra into a singular event. Focussing on a profound emotional story rather than fancy action scenes or forced romance, he stayed away from conventional Bollywood movies. The prison-break angle of the movie is carried realistically, and Bala’s direction gives it complexity, so rendering it both touching and suspenseful. Though a few scenes should have been cut, the non-linear narrative keeps the viewers engaged and challenges them to put together the chronology of the plot.
The Music:
One of Jigra’s strongest points is background music, it sets the tone for every scenario. Particularly, in emotional scenes and action scenes, the strong and well-constructed music enhances impact. Though the BGM sometimes sounds overwhelming, it usually resonates with the tension of the movie. Particularly in Manoj Pahwa’s moment, the nostalgic use of the old Bollywood song “Yari Hai Imaan Mera” adds a layer of depth and makes it among the highlights of the film.
