The newest film in Bollywood’s horror-comedy genre, “Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3,” is released in theatres on 1st November. Kartik Aaryan, Vidhya Balan, and Madhuri Dixit all contribute their distinct energies to the picture, which is directed with an aim to combine humour and horror. On paper, the film has promise, but it falls short in a number of crucial areas, leaving viewers split.
I don’t understand why filmmakers choose to use a gifted actress like Tripti Dimri merely for aesthetic purposes. Even though I am aware of how beautiful she is, at least make her appearance valuable. I don’t know about you, but I think this movie would have been perfectly great without her. At least we wouldn’t have had to endure not one, but two entire love songs and dances, or whatever movement you want to call it. In fact, it might have been better.
The Storyline
It appears that Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 is repeating the same narrative. Many years later, the daughter of a king who mistakenly had her burned at the stake—for what cause, of course—continues to haunt the kingdom in the hopes of retribution. At this point, an unsuspecting fake “baba” steps in to save the day. I understand that the story is as ancient as time itself but underneath the surface of familiarity.
Ruhaan Baba, a fraudster posing as an exorcist, takes on a lucrative case at a haunted castle, unravelling a sinister plot involving mischievous priests, culminating in a hilarious yet thrilling ride filled with unexpected twists and scares.
The Plot
The plot of the movie is one of its main flaws. Although Ruhaan Baba’s character has the potential to be a cunning, endearing scammer, the storyline falls short of this expectation. The narrative veers has scenes that seem out of place and lack a distinct goal or course. Viewers who anticipate a crisp, exciting plot are left perplexed and find it difficult to understand where the story is going. By the end, it no longer seems to be a coherent, captivating story but rather a series of unrelated incidents.
The Acting
The performances in “Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3” are its redeeming feature. With a vibrant portrayal of Ruhaan Baba, Kartik Aaryan once again demonstrates his talent. Despite the film’s flaws, his moments are entertaining because he infuses an otherwise drab script with personality and vitality. Even though the writing doesn’t give them much to work with, Madhuri Dixit and Vidhya Balan give strong performances that give their parts dimension. Their presence gives the film a level of quality that would otherwise help it hold viewers’ interest. Unfortunately, the lack of character development and the flimsy plot limit their outstanding acting.
The Cinematography
The film’s inability to successfully strike a balance between comedy and horror suggests that the director’s concept is not entirely clear. In contrast to earlier “Bhool Bhulaiyaa” films, which achieved a special balance, this film fails. Ruhaan’s amusing adventures with the castle’s mysteries are the only times the director really shines. Overall, though, the pacing is erratic, and the scary and humorous parts come across as forced. A frustrating viewing experience results from the audience’s inability to connect with the film’s ideas due to this ambiguity.
The Direction
Despite not being particularly innovative, the cinematography does a good job at capturing the spooky aura of the castle and the setting. In an effort to evoke tension and mystery, the haunted castle is portrayed using a combination of dramatic camera angles and low lighting. Nevertheless, the picture cannot be saved by the cinematography alone because it frequently seems disconnected from the tumultuous plot.
The Screenplay
The wit and incisiveness required for an effective horror-comedy are absent from “Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3″‘s writing. The speech is unimaginative and lacks the intensity and witty humour that one would anticipate from a film of this sort. It is difficult for viewers to identify the intended comedy because the scenes are ill-timed and the jokes seem forced. The scenes intended to arouse terror come across as cliched and overused, making the horror components equally ineffectual.
The Positive Points
- Strong Acting Performances: The main cast, especially Kartik Aaryan, Vidhya Balan, and Madhuri Dixit, delivered commendable performances.
- Cinematic Atmosphere: The haunted castle setting, with its atmospheric visuals, does manage to create a spooky backdrop that complements the film’s theme.
- The Climax: The climax of the movie and suspense is a point that makes the movie bit interesting but only at the end.
The Negative Points
- Weak Storyline: The plot is poorly structured, with too many unnecessary twists and a lack of direction, making it difficult for audiences to stay engaged.
- Lack of Humor and Horror: As a horror-comedy, the movie fails to deliver on both fronts. The humour feels stale, and the horror scenes are predictable and lack genuine scares.
- Mediocre Music: Unlike previous instalments, the music in “Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3” is forgettable and lacks the catchy, memorable tunes that could have elevated the film.
- Poor Song Placements: There are two songs which I feel could have been avoided as it distracts the audience and has no meaning to the story. Both these songs are easily forgettable without any sweet music.
Personal Opinion
Due to its disorganised plot, lack of original humour, and lack of real scares, “Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3” falls short of its potential as an exciting sequel to the well-loved horror-comedy series. It is difficult to remain entertained due to the poor directing and unimpressive storyline, even though the actors—Kartik Aaryan, Vidhya Balan, and Madhuri Dixit in particular—bring a hint of charm and talent. For most viewers, “Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3” may feel like a wasted opportunity that mostly depends on its star power, but franchise fans may find moments of satisfaction.
