In the world of Hotstar’s “The Freelancer,” we are taken on a rollercoaster of emotions, action, and family dynamics. The series revolves around an ex-cop turned mercenary, Avinash, on a daunting mission to rescue a young girl, Aliya, stranded in war-torn Syria amid rising ISIS threats. As we dive into the plot, we witness a familiar theme but with unique twists that keep us hooked.
Avinash’s Journey: Navigating Politics and Intelligence Agencies
Anupam Kher steals the show with his portrayal of Avinash in Part 1 however, in Part 2 the show is taken on his shoulder by Mohit Raina as Avinash. An ex-cop navigating through the complexities of politics and intelligence agencies. His character brings a wealth of experience, and Kher’s performance is nothing short of commendable. A pivotal scene, where Dr. Khan narrates Avinash’s story, showcases Kher’s acting prowess, leaving a lasting impact on the audience.
Mohit Raina’s Evolution: From Doubts to Dazzling
After watching Mohit Raina don the army uniform in “URI: The Surgical Strike,” expectations were high. However, at the onset of “The Freelancer,” Raina’s fit into the series seemed uncertain. Whether it was his physique or body language, it took a couple of episodes to fully accept him as Avinash. Yet, as the series progresses, Raina’s portrayal gains strength and his physicality becomes secondary to the intellect required for the mission. Mohit is more than superb in the second part also. His physic and agility seem perfect for the show, especially in the second part.
The Familiar Plot: A Plea for Creative Exploration
The central plot, revolving around a girl trapped in the clutches of ISIS, is not entirely novel for Indian audiences. The recurring theme raises a plea for creativity in storytelling. The threat of ISIS is undeniably real, and the exploitation of innocent lives is a grave concern. However, the time might be ripe for writers to explore fresh concepts rather than rehashing the same narrative. It’s an invitation to infuse creativity into the world of Indian series and films.
What Sets “The Freelancer” Apart: A Freelancer’s Mission
“The Freelancer” distinguishes itself by introducing a freelancer on a mission to extract a loved one. The collaboration of intelligence agencies adds a layer of complexity, making the series stand out in its genre. Despite the overarching theme, the series manages to carve its niche by focusing on a singular mission, offering viewers a fresh perspective within the familiar terrain. In part 2 of the show, the role of CIA is also critical.
A Glimpse into Avinash’s World: Heartbreak and Resilience
A poignant moment occurs when a setback in Avinash’s professional life leads to a heartbreaking incident within his family. This scene serves as a powerful reminder not to succumb entirely to sorrow, urging audiences to cherish the moments amidst life’s challenges. In part 2 the relation between Avinash and his wife also gets sorted.
The Heartbeat Moments: Aaliyah’s Communication
Every interaction between Aaliyah and her family intensifies the emotional pulse of the series. The uncertainty of her fate, once her cover is blown, keeps viewers on the edge of their seats. These moments serve as a testament to the unpredictable nature of the storyline. In Part 2 these curious moments continued and I was on the edge of my seat during the show.
Summing Up: The Verdict on “The Freelancer”
In conclusion, “The Freelancer” emerges as a gripping series that justifies the investment of your time. The layered performances, particularly Mohit Raina and Anupam Kher’s, elevate the viewing experience. While expectations were high for Mohit Raina, some might find his portrayal falling slightly short. Nevertheless, the series offers a unique take on a familiar theme, showcasing the power of collaboration and resilience. In totality the show is awesome and all the actors have done their job perfectly well.
Final Score – [6.5/10]
