The news that Gautam Gambhir, not Rohit Sharma, removed Hardik Pandya and made Suryakumar Yadav the new T20 captain has been circulating everywhere for the past few days. It was reported that Suryakumar Yadav would be the new T20 captain of Team India and that the BCCI and selectors had made Suryakumar Yadav the captain at Gautam Gambhir’s suggestion. However, a new significant development has emerged.
The big news now is that this major decision was made not just on Gautam Gambhir’s suggestion, but at the behest of Team India’s ODI and Test captain Rohit Sharma. The BCCI, selectors, and Gautam Gambhir have taken this big decision. Rohit Sharma has accomplished two goals with one action: making Surya the captain and removing Hardik Pandya from captaincy, who had previously taken the Mumbai Indians captaincy from him.
Here’s what’s happening: Gambhir and Rohit have put forward SKY’s name. Until yesterday or even this morning, news was coming that SKY was being made the new T20 captain at Gambhir’s suggestion. But now the news that has come to light is that both Gautam Gambhir and Rohit Sharma together have put forward Suryakumar Yadav’s name.
A short while ago, a reputed daily newspaper tweeted this news via sources. Hardik was removed at Rohit’s behest, not Gambhir’s. We shouldn’t forget that just a few months ago, Hardik had taken the Mumbai Indians captaincy from Rohit Sharma. And now it seems that Rohit has once again taken the T20 captaincy from Hardik – in the 2024 World Cup.
Moving on, “Make SKY the T20 captain” is Rohit’s statement. You can see the quote that has come from sources. The daily newspaper reported that Rohit, while presenting his case, said to make Suryakumar Yadav the new T20 captain. SKY is a better captain than Hardik – this is Rohit Sharma’s belief. When Rohit Sharma’s opinion was sought, he vocally presented his case and said to make SKY the new T20 captain.
Why did he do this? Gambhir supported Rohit’s decision. When the decision came from Rohit, Gambhir, who anyway has a good bonding with Rohit, also said okay, make SKY the captain. Gambhir also wanted SKY because they have a good relationship, having played together for KKR. Rohit and SKY have been playing together in Mumbai for so many years. SKY considers Rohit Sharma his elder brother.
So, in this situation, both of them made SKY the captain and sidelined Hardik. Moving forward, SKY will be India’s new T20 captain. This has now been finalized, and SKY will be given this responsibility until 2026.
