After Team India’s ODI series loss to South Africa, cricketer-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar slammed the national selectors’ decision to re-induct Ravichandran Ashwin, saying, “I have been maintaining right from the start of the series that he has sneaked back into India’s white-ball plans for no reason.”
In this series, Ashwin made his ODI comeback after a four-year absence. The 35-year-old offie, on the other hand, failed to impress.
South Africa defeated India on Friday, chasing down a 288-run target to grab a 2-0 lead in the three-match series. The visiting bowling attack failed to make an impression in both games, particularly in the middle overs, with Ashwin returning with numbers of 1/52 and 0/68 in two games.
“See Ashwin, I’ve been insisting right from the start of the series that he’s sneaked back into India’s white-ball preparations for no reason,” Manjrekar responded.
“He hasn’t made a compelling case for a comeback, but the thinking has shifted and he has been reintroduced into the plans. Hopefully, India will now realise that he is not the impact spinner that the country requires.”
He went on to say that India needs Kuldeep Yadav back in the middle overs to remedy the problem.
“India needs to return to the days when wickets were taken in the middle overs. So India’s spin attack isn’t the best, and while Ashwin has a lengthy history of doing so, Yuzvendra Chahal has been a good Indian white-ball spinner, but his skills appear to be dwindling.
“On a long-term basis, this spin attack is not the best for India.” It’s time for India to revert to Kuldeep Yadav, who has a track record of batting through teams. Kuldeep will re-enter the picture,” Manjrekar stated.
