Serum Institute Takes a Stand Against Cervical Cancer: ‘IPledgeToPrevent’ Initiative Unveiled
Newzdaddy Health And Fitness Updates
In January 2024, the Serum Institute of India, known as the world’s largest vaccine maker, is actively working to dispel misconceptions about Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and raise awareness. They’ve launched the ‘IPledgeToPrevent’ initiative, aimed at promoting awareness and prevention of HPV, a virus linked to cervical cancer.
Indigenous Vaccine Approval:
In 2022, India approved its very first indigenously developed HPV vaccine, named CERVAVAC, created by the Serum Institute of India. This marks a significant stride in the fight against cervical cancer. The country’s Health Ministry is also considering including the HPV vaccine in the Universal Immunisation Program, a move that could make it more accessible to a broader population.
Global Health Priority:
Cervical Cancer Awareness Month coincides with a world still recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, causing disruptions to crucial health services. The Serum Institute’s initiatives align with global efforts, including those by the World Health Organization (WHO), which has prioritized cervical cancer as the first noncommunicable disease to be eradicated. Effective screening methods and vaccinations are available, and countries are urged to meet WHO targets for vaccination, screening, and treatment by 2030 to eliminate cervical cancer.
Barriers and Solutions:
While an affordable indigenous HPV vaccine holds promise for addressing India’s cervical cancer burden, it’s essential to tackle barriers hindering vaccination. The government’s commitment to incorporating HPV vaccination into the national immunization program is a positive step, aiming to highlight its significance among the public.
Indigenous Quadrivalent HPV Vaccine:
India’s fight against cervical cancer sees a promising advance with the launch of its first indigenous quadrivalent HPV vaccine – Cervavac. Developed through a collaboration between the Indian Government and the Serum Institute of India, this vaccine protects against HPV strains that are most likely to lead to cancers of the cervix, vagina, and vulva. This breakthrough not only benefits India but contributes to global strides against cervical cancer.
Universal Vaccination Call:
The importance of HPV vaccination extends to both females and males above 9 years old, as males can carry and transmit HPV to their female partners, potentially leading to cancer. The call for universal vaccination becomes crucial in preventing HPV-associated cancers and fostering healthier communities.
