In the midst of an economic crisis in Sri Lanka, the Australian cricket team’s six-week tour could have a good outcome. Sri Lanka Cricket said on Monday (June 6) that all proceeds from the three Twenty20 internationals, five one-day internationals, and two Test matches will be donated to public welfare initiatives.

“Our people are going through a difficult moment,” SLC Secretary Mohan de Silva told reporters in Colombo. “Despite the difficulties we as a nation are facing, we are grateful to Cricket Australia and the Australian government for supporting this series.”

The island nation is in the midst of its worst economic crisis since its 1948 independence, on the verge of bankruptcy and enslaved by a massive foreign debt that leaves it unable to pay for essential goods. Food, gasoline, medicine, and cooking gas are among the basic requirements that Sri Lankans are unable to obtain.

Sri Lanka Cricket has already donated $2 million to the health sector, which will be used to purchase critical medications. During the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic in Sri Lanka, cricket was generally played in empty venues for two years, albeit a 50% capacity audience was let in for the test series against the West Indies in Galle last December.

The series kicks off on Tuesday with a T20 match at R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, marking the first time Sri Lankan supporters have been allowed inside venues for limited-overs events since the outbreak began. The T20s on Tuesday and Wednesday were sold out within five hours of going on sale on Saturday.

The T20 world champion Australians named a powerful XI to face Sri Lanka in the series opener, which includes Steve Smith in the middle order at the expense of Josh Inglis.
