The Women’s T20 Challenge will be held this year as well, according to BCCI President Sourav Ganguly. According to him, the T20 tournament will take place during the Indian Premier League (IPL) playoffs.

“The Women’s T20 Challenge will return in the month of May this year,” Ganguly told Sportstar.

The BCCI launched the Women’s T20 Challenge in 2018 as a three-team mini-tournament to promote women’s franchise cricket. It has happened three times since then in IPL Eliminator and Qualifier matches. The competition has been postponed until 2021 because of an increase in Covid-19 cases.

“We will host the IPL, and perhaps in the future, whenever the number of women players increases, we will be able to organize a larger women’s IPL, and we will take it from there,” Ganguly said.

“However, the Women’s T20 Challenge will take place during the IPL playoffs this year as well,” he added.

Three teams – Supernovas, Trailblazers, and Velocity – compete in two league matches each, followed by a final. The IPL Trailblazers won the Women’s T20 Challenge in 2020, headed by Smriti Mandhana. Despite this, the competition began as a one-off contest. Later in the year, it was increased to a four-match event.

The BCCI President also discussed the impending ODI and T20I series between India and the West Indies. “, he explained “The 1000th ODI is a significant milestone for Indian cricket, but the match will be played in front of a sparse crowd. The series will also be played at venues that are nearly empty. It could have been done a lot better if COVID-19 hadn’t existed, but you can’t help yourself.”
