Cricket Australia has rejected Sydney Sixers’ third and last application to get Australian batsman Steve Smith on board for their BBL-11 final against Perth Scorchers on Friday (January 28). (CA). The Sixers tried to get Smith in before the BBL Play-off on January 26 against the Adelaide Strikers, but CA refused, despite the fact that the team lacked the means to play a 13-man team.
COVID-19 and injuries have wreaked havoc on the Sixers. Smith, the Test vice-captain, has not renewed his contract with the Sixers for the coming season because he was expected to be unavailable owing to international commitments.
The Ashes and the limited-overs series versus New Zealand are two examples of such commitments. The Sixers contacted CA to contract Smith for the remaining matches when the series against the Blackcaps was postponed due to COVID-related logistical issues — and a window emerged for Smith to play in the BBL.
Only cricketers from the central pool of ‘local replacement players’ created on January 10 can be selected by BBL teams in the event of injury or a COVID-19 issue, according to the CA. Sixers captain Moises Henriques and veteran spinner Steve O’Keefe will play despite injury now that Smith’s chances of playing in the final are officially dashed. Nearly half of the Sixers’ starting lineup is either injured or has tested positive for COVID.
According to cricket.com.au, Henriques made one more request for Australia’s No. 4 to be included in the lineup for the final at Marvel Stadium, but it was rejected.’ “The only way Smith could have played in the decider was if he had been added to the Centralised Player Replacement pool, which would have required approval from the BBL Technical Committee, but it’s believed officials determined that the Sixers had adequate batting cover in the pool,” according to the report.
While Henriques confirmed that he had requested Smith’s inclusion for the third time, he also stated that despite his calf injury, he should be able to participate in the final. “We’ve specifically requested that he be brought in.”Henriques said, “(Smith) into the pool.” “I’m not sure there’s anyone left in the pool that we want to bring in unless we can get Steve.” We’ll first look within our own resources, such as playing an additional bowler, before searching outside. To be honest, we have no idea what the balance will be like; it’s something we’ll have to decide on before the game begins.
“We have enough players to form an XI; we’d simply have to recruit bowlers to bat in different spots,” Henriques remarked.
