71-year-old Tamil actor and Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) chief, Vijayakanth, has passed away at a private hospital in Chennai. The veteran actor was on ventilator support, having tested positive for Covid-19, although the hospital’s statement mentioned pneumonia as the cause of his deteriorating health.
Vijayakanth was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday for a routine health check-up, as reported by his party, assuring the public of his well-being. However, his health took a turn for the worse, leading to the use of ventilatory support. The hospital’s official statement stated that despite the best efforts of the medical staff, he couldn’t be saved and succumbed to the illness on the morning of December 28, 2023.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin announced that the DMDK leader would be given a funeral with full state honors, acknowledging Vijayakanth’s contributions to the Tamil film industry and his impactful political career.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sadness over the loss, describing Vijayakanth as a “legend of the Tamil film world” and a political leader committed to public service. Modi recalled his fond interactions with the late actor and extended condolences to Vijayakanth’s family, fans, and followers.
Vijayakanth, who had been previously hospitalized on November 20 for respiratory issues, leaves behind a rich legacy. His journey in the public eye began with a successful acting career spanning 154 movies. Later, he transitioned into politics, founding the DMDK and serving as a Member of the Legislative Assembly twice. Notably, he held the position of Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from 2011 to 2016.
In recent years, concerns about Vijayakanth’s health have led him to take a step back from active political engagement. The news of his passing has left DMDK supporters and fans mourning the loss of a charismatic figure who made significant contributions to both the entertainment and political spheres.
