Vizhinjam: India’s First Transshipment Port Welcomes Its First Container Ship
In a historic event for India’s maritime industry, Adani Ports & SEZ welcomed the first mother ship to the Vizhinjam port. This significant achievement marks India’s entry into the global transshipment market and highlights Vizhinjam’s potential as a key player in international trade routes. The port’s opening is a pivotal moment, not only for the region but also for the entire nation.
Grand Inauguration
The grand inauguration was led by the Chief Minister of Kerala, Shri Pinarayi Vijayan, alongside Shri V. N. Vasavan, the Minister for Ports, Kerala. The event also saw the presence of Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, the Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, who was the chief guest. Their presence underscored the importance of this port in boosting India’s trade capabilities.
India’s First Automated Port
Vizhinjam port stands out as India’s first automated port, boasting state-of-the-art infrastructure and facilities. The port is designed to handle large ships efficiently, equipped with modern container handling equipment, and advanced IT systems. The arrival of the San Fernando, a 300-meter-long container vessel operated by Maersk with a capacity of 8,000-9,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), marks the beginning of a new chapter. The vessel will offload about 2,000 containers and manage 400 container movements within the ship, showcasing the port’s capabilities.
A New Benchmark in Maritime Technology
Karan Adani, Managing Director of Adani Ports and SEZ Limited (APSEZ), highlighted the significance of this milestone. “San Fernando – now berthed at our harbor is a symbol of a new, glorious achievement in Indian maritime history. It is a messenger that will tell the world that India’s first transshipment terminal and the largest deepwater port has begun commercial operations,” he stated. He further emphasized the port’s cutting-edge technology, “No other port in India – including our own highly advanced Mundra Port – has these technologies. What we have already installed here is South Asia’s most advanced container handling technology. And once we complete the automation and the Vessel Traffic Management System, Vizhinjam will be in a class of its own as one of the most technologically sophisticated transshipment ports in the world.”
Addressing India’s Transshipment Needs
Currently, a significant portion of India’s container traffic is transshipped via ports outside the country. With 25% of India’s container traffic being transshipped en route to its final destination, the lack of a dedicated transshipment port has been a gap in India’s trade infrastructure. Until now, three-fourths of India’s transshipped cargo was handled by foreign ports. Vizhinjam aims to change this by providing a domestic solution for transshipment needs, thereby reducing dependency on foreign ports and boosting India’s trade efficiency.
Connecting Global Trade Routes
Vizhinjam’s strategic location is one of its biggest advantages. Situated on the southwestern coast of India, the port is ideally placed to handle traffic along major international routes. It will facilitate trade between the US, Europe, Africa, and the Indian subcontinent, as well as the Far East. This makes Vizhinjam a crucial hub in the global trade network, enhancing India’s connectivity and competitiveness in international trade.
The Vizhinjam Port Project
The Vizhinjam International Seaport in Kerala is a landmark project promoted by the Government of Kerala through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. This project represents the largest private sector investment in Kerala, reflecting the state’s commitment to enhancing its infrastructure.
After securing the bid, Adani Ports and Logistics created a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV), Adani Vizhinjam Port Private Limited (AVPPL), to develop the port. On 17 August 2015, AVPPL entered into a concession agreement with the Department of Ports, Government of Kerala, for the development and operation of Vizhinjam International Seaport. Despite facing numerous challenges, the port project has reached advanced stages of completion, ready to transform the region’s economic landscape.
