Shane Warne hung around with Mick Jagger and Elton John, bowled to Ed Sheeran in the practice nets at Lord’s Cricket Ground, and was engaged to Liz Hurley for a time. He had a poker face, a cricketing brain, and a penchant for taking wickets and making friends.

Following his death in Thailand on March 4 from a suspected heart attack at the age of 52, fellow cricketers, actors, comedians, musicians, politicians, personalities, and common fans described the Australian leg-spin bowler as “bigger than life.” With his dyed blond hair, impish manner, and competitive streak, Warne transcended a sport that catapulted him into fame due to his remarkable talent. In far-flung corners of the cricketing globe, he became a household name.
Chris Martin of Coldplay wrote a song called The Eulogy, which was performed during the private family burial on March 20. It will be performed during a public memorial service at Warne’s beloved Melbourne Cricket Ground on Wednesday (March 30), alongside tributes from Elton John, Robbie Williams, and Ed Sheeran.

More than 50,000 people are expected to attend the memorial at the venue where Warne achieved some of his greatest achievements, including becoming the first player to take 700 wickets in test cricket in 2006.

In Warne’s honor, a part of the massive MCG venue will be renamed. Outside the stadium, a monument of Warne in full delivery stride has become an unofficial site for visitors to ponder and pay tribute for the past three weeks.

Warne’s immediate success in the Ashes, the famous and passionate cricket rivalry between England and Australia, a former colony, that stretches back to the 1800s and has generated some of the sport’s most iconic moments, is responsible for much of his fame.

In the early 1990s, a leg-spinner was a type of wrist-spin bowling that wasn’t often used at the highest levels of the game. When Warne arrived in England for the 1993 Ashes series, just over a year into his international career, he had developed a reputation as a mystery bowler.

“I thought we had a weapon that no one else in world cricket had,” said Mark Taylor, a teammate on that trip and future Australia captain, in the Amazon Prime documentary ‘Shane,’ which was published only weeks before Warne died.
